TikTok’s golden girl has shut down rumours that she will be a guest at the 2021 Met Gala.
During an interview on Sirius XM this week, Charli D’Amelio revealed she will not be attending fashion’s biggest night out this year because she’s too young.
“The funny thing about [the rumours] is I’m actually not old enough to go to the Met Gala but I have gotten so much hate about that and I’m like, guys, I can’t even go,” the 17-year-old said.
Charli’s sister, Dixie D’Amelio, who was part of the interview as well, did not confirm or deny if she would be in attendance.
While the Met Gala guest list is not typically revealed until the lucky invitees make their way down the red carpet, an alleged leaked copy began circulating mid-August following posts from Instagram account @_metgala2021, who is not affiliated with The Anna Wintour Costume Center nor the New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The account proceeded to also post a fake seating chart, which saw Charli seated between Kylie Jenner and The Weeknd.
According to the (very much not legitimate) list circulating, invitees this year will include TikTok stars Charli & Dixie D’Amelio, Addison Rae, Noah Beck, Loren Grey, Bella Poarch, and Khabane Lame. Amongst the YouTube creators allegedly invited are Emma Chamberlain, James Charles, Jeffree Star, Bretman Rock, Liza Koshy, and NikkieTutorials.
Both Liza Koshy and James Charles have attended the Met Gala in the past.
The rumoured guest list has sparked mixed reactions from fans, with many saying digital creators should not be invited to such an elite event. Others argue that influencers have always been invited to the Met Gala — such as socialites and heiresses— but the rise of social media has shifted who those influencers are.
The 2021 Met Gala will open on September 13th, so we’ll know soon enough who made the guest list.
