Will The Met Gala 2021 Guest List Be Filled With TikTok Stars?

As the 2021 Met Gala fast approaches, speculation over the evening’s top-secret guest list is naturally making its rounds. The obvious question on everyone’s mind is who will be invited? And perhaps not so obvious, how many of those invited will be TikTok stars?

It’s no surprise that the celebrity and influencer landscape has changed over the last 18 months.

With the COVID-19 pandemic came the rise of TikTok, the world’s fastest-growing social media platform ever. Unlike predecessor apps like YouTube and Instagram, TikTok’s influence has transcended the confines of the platform, seeping into mainstream culture and churning out some of the internet’s biggest stars.

What took traditional influencers years to achieve— like landing major movie roles, hanging out with A-list celebrities, collaborating with massive brands, and launching their own companies— TikTok stars have done in a matter of months.

TikTok’s impact on the viral zeitgeist is unmatched, and it seems Anna Wintour has taken notice.

Inklings that “fashion’s biggest night out” would be prioritising Gen Z influencers came with an announcement back in May that this year’s co-chairs would include Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Gorman.

As ambassadors of the event, Met Gala co-chairs are responsible for curating the aesthetics of the night, embracing the theme, and as evidence of this year, helping create the guest list.

While the Met Gala guest list is not typically revealed until the lucky invitees make their way down the red carpet, an alleged leaked copy has been circulating online following posts from Instagram account @_metgala2021, who is not affiliated with The Anna Wintour Costume Center nor the New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Though we can’t confirm the legitimacy of this list (and given the spelling errors, we’re thinking it’s very much not legit), it seems digital creators will dominate this year— which tracks given Instagram and Facebook are sponsoring the evening.

Alleged invitees include TikTok stars Charli & Dixie D’Amelio, Addison Rae, Noah Beck, Loren Grey, Bella Poarch, and Khabane Lame. Amongst the YouTube creators allegedly invited are Emma Chamberlain, James Charles, Jeffree Star, Bretman Rock, Liza Koshy, and NikkieTutorials.

On September 3rd, Charli D’Amelio confirmed she will not be attending the Met Gala this year.

Both Liza Koshy and James Charles have attended the Met Gala in the past.

Some have been critical of the reported guest list, claiming YouTube and TikTok stars don’t deserve an invite to such an elite event, while others are excited that digital culture is being recognised for its influence on fashion, beauty, and pop culture.

The 2021 Met Gala will open on September 13th, followed by a second installment on May 2nd, 2022.

We can’t wait to see a new wave of Gen Z influencers take the event!
