Another day, another installment in the Olivia Rodrigo-Joshua Bassett-Sabrina Carpenter love triangle saga.
After dropping her latest single Skin in response to Olivia Rodrigo’s drivers license, 21-year-old Sabrina Carpenter took to Instagram today to announce she is ready to move on from the drama.
In a lengthy Instagram caption, the singer-actress shares her thoughts on drivers license, internet bullies, and the backlash she received for writing and releasing Skin.
“thank you to everyone who has listened to skin ? especially those who have opened their minds to lyrically what i was trying to get across,” she captioned a moody selfie. “i wasn’t bothered by a few lines in a (magnificent) song and wrote a diss track about it.
i was at a tipping point in my life for countless reasons. so i was inspired to do what i usually do to cope, write something that i wish i could have told myself in the past.”
The “magnificent song” Sabrina refers to is Olivia’s chart-topping drivers license, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart after breaking records across streaming services like Spotify and Amazon Music. Throughout the autobiographical song, Olivia (presumably) sings about her breakup from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett. According to reports, Joshua began dating Sabrina Carpenter shortly after he and Olivia split.
Olivia makes a nod to Sabrina (again, presumably) in drivers license, singing, “You’re probably with that blonde girl who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about”.
While the 17-year-old only mentions Sabrina once, fans quickly became obsessed with this young Hollywood love triangle and unfortunately, Sabrina has faced a flood of hate and online trolling since the song’s debut. On Friday, the Tall Girl star released her song Skin in response to drivers license, in an effort to convey her side of the story.
“people can only get to you if you give them the power to. and a lot of people were trying to get to me,” Sabrina continued on Instagram. “[Skin] isn’t calling out one single person. some lines address a specific situation, while other lines address plenty of other experiences I’ve had this past year.. it also shows that many things have actually gotten under my skin.. and I’m still learning to not give other people so much power over my feelings. I know a lot of you struggle with the same thing.”
She finished by asking fans not to “take this as an opportunity to send more hate anyone’s way” as she does not want this drama to become an “endless cycle”.
It seems this might be case closed on the messiest Disney star love triangle since Miley-Nick-Selena. For now.
