Never a dull moment for Ye!
After years of teasing that he might eventually run for President of the United States, Kanye West has officially announced he is entering the 2020 election.
On the Fourth of July, the music and fashion mogul took to Twitter to share the news, writing, “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for the president of the United States! #2020VISION“
Kanye’s announcement comes as no surprise to fans. The rapper first made his political aspirations known at the 2015 MTV VMAs when he expressed interest in running in the 2020 election while receiving the Video Vanguard Award from Taylor Swift. He further solidified his ambition at New York Fashion Week while debuting his second Yeezy collection.
Earlier this year, Kanye West filed a trademark for Yeezy Beauty and wife Kim Kardashian became an almost-billionaire. However, recent developments speak to Kanye being drastically underprepared for a presidential election, some speculating it is a publicity stunt more closely tied with the launch of new music or his partnership with US clothing brand GAP.
Recently noted by Bloomberg, it seems Kanye has yet to officially register with the Federal Election Commission, a crucial first step in participating in the presidential race. Additionally, while Ye has expressed support for Trump in the past, he would have to register as and run as an Independent, which as Teen Vogue reports the deadline for has passed for a number of states, including Indiana, Maine, New York, New Mexico, North Carolina and Texas.
Despite his announcement tweet having over half a million retweets, 1.1 million likes and the public backing of tech entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk, we’d say Kanye has some serious obstacles to overcome if he plans on reaching the White House by November 3rd.
We can only wait and see.
