Dixie D’Amelio is opening up about her health issues with fans.
The TikTok creator and reality show star took to Instagram live on Tuesday to share that she’s been recently diagnosed with premenstrual dysphoric disorder— a condition some women experience leading up to their period that causes severe irritability, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts.
“I wasn’t feeling great and not really sure why,” Dixie starts. “I recently got diagnosed with this thing called PMDD, which is premenstrual dysphoric disorder.”
Dixie continues, “It really affects your moods and your behaviour and many different parts of your life. I feel like I didn’t realise how much it was affecting me until I got to this point I was in last week.”
Dixie goes on to explain that for two weeks out of the month, the condition would “really disrupt” her attitude, personality, relationships, and her pre-existing anxiety.
“And it’s very obvious to see in these next couple episodes of the show,” she says of the new episodes of The D’Amelio Show that have been released on Hulu this week.
“I have never been like, so low…and having no idea what was wrong with me was very, um, alarming and I just felt like I had no control over my body or mind and I had no idea what was wrong but it would turn on and off like a light switch.”
The 21-year-old says it was difficult to explain to people which is why it took about seven years to get diagnosed.
While there is no cure for PMDD, Dixie says she is working on developing coping mechanisms and learning more about the condition to better manage it.
