On Thursday, singer Becky G dropped her second collab with Colourpop Cosmetics called “Hola Chola.”

The line, which includes a 12-pan all matte eyeshadow palette, 3 liquid lipsticks with liners, 2 bronzers, a liquid liner, and a cherry lip gloss, was inspired by her Mexican roots— primarily her mother’s glam routine from the 90s.

While the collab seemed well-received by Becky’s 23 million Instagram followers, selling out in 20 minutes flat, both the name and the concept have been heavily scrutinized online.

As it turns out, the name “Hola Chola” already belongs to an LA-based indie brand that sells embellished clothing, accessories, and artwork inspired by Mexican-American culture. Owner Susana Gonzalez has been vocal about the rip off of the business name on her brand’s Instagram page and recently told Remezcla that she laughed at how identical the branding was to her work.

Makeup lovers from the Latin community have also been speaking out against the line, accusing the collab of being tone-deaf.

““Hola chola” Gonna have white girls creating “chola inspired looks” ?, one user wrote on Twitter.

Others are criticizing the shade range, saying the bronzers are way too light to accommodate Mexican-American skin tones.

Some are even asking the King of Call-Outs, Jeffree Star, to help spread awareness for Susanna’s brand and expose the collab as a ripoff.

So far neither Becky G nor Colourpop have addressed the criticism.
