This is why we can’t have nice things!
Off the back of her brave announcement yesterday, NikkieTutorials is now unfortunately facing transphobia from a powerful player inside the beauty industry.
Amidst the hunt for the person who blackmailed the viral star into coming out as transgender (which is disgusting btw), fans came across the Instagram account for Too Faced employee and sister of Cofounder Jerrod Blandino, who goes by the name Dani California.
In her bio, Dani wrote “Transgender huh? That’s not the only thing she’s been LYING about.”
Um, excuse me????
Fans were quick to screengrab the bio before she changed it to read, “Lets be clear, I love trans people & dislike anyone who lies to hurt others! Period!,” maintaining that Nikkie is lying about being transgender.
Big ooft.
Too Faced and NikkieTutorials have had a rocky relationship for years.
They collaborated on an eyeshadow palette, Power of Makeup, back in 2016. Nikkie made a video swatching the palette prior to its release, but when other beauty YouTubers and consumers alike started receiving the palette, it was clear they were not the same as the one Nikkie had shown in her video. Basically, the quality was poor, everyone felt lied to, and Nikkie stayed silent on the whole situation.
It was later revealed on Shane Dawson‘s series, The Beautiful World of Jeffree Star, that Nikkie was only paid $50,000 for that collab, which brought in over $10 million for the brand. Fans started to question Too Faced’s business ethics, wondering if they intentionally duped Nikkie because they knew she was naive.
Nikkie later went on record stating that although she didn’t know any better, she stands behind signing that contract, but the collaboration ruined her audience’s trust which she had to work for years to rebuild. She said was obvious she was sent a completely different palette for her video reveal (which she was unaware of at the time) and didn’t know how to handle the situation when the negative reviews started rolling in.
Upon seeing Dani’s bio, Twitter erupted in support of Nikkie and demanded Jerrod take action against his sister who has a long history of problematic behaviour, putting the brand at constant risk.
And it looks like he did finally did.
In a statement released across Instagram and Twitter, Jerrod announced that his sister is “no longer an employee of Too Faced” and that her words and actions do not reflect his opinions or those of the brand.
Though the damage is already done, we’re happy to hear he’s taking a stand.
We’re so proud of Nikkie for coming out and hopefully this is a step in the right direction for trans acceptance everywhere.
