Pinterest has soft-launched Shuffles, an invite-only collage-making app that inspires its users to tap into their creativity. The app’s description suggests it could be used for visualising a room makeover, fashion ideas, moodboards and more.
The app was released in late July 2022, perfectly timed to collage-style video “mood boards” going viral on TikTok.
With Shuffles, users can build their own collages using saved pins from their Pinterest board or Pinterest’s extensive photo library. You can also take or import photos of objects you want to include using the camera. Once you have some photos selected you can either let the app auto-configure it into a collage, or you can customise your own masterpiece. Users even cut out individual objects from an image with a quick tap (no Photoshop skills needed!).
The app features motion effects for images such as shake, spin, pulse, and swivel— allowing users to bring their collages to life, literally.
The final product can be shared with friends for collaboration or posted to public groups where others can “remix” the original creation in their own way.
Right now users need an invite code to get in — something you can only get from an existing Shuffles user. As the app has not publicly launched yet, each user is given just five invites to distribute.
This exclusivity has helped catapult Shuffles to virality in just a few short weeks, with TikTok users going to great lengths to gain access codes.
Despite being invite-only, the firm Sensor Tower found the app is now No. 66 overall on the U.S. iPhone App Store and is the No. 1 overall app in Ireland, New Zealand, and the U.K. It is No. 2 overall in Australia and No. 3 in Canada.
The app has come at a time when Pinterest is looking to transition from an image pin-board to a platform that can compete within the modern creator economy, offering video and shoppable content.
While the company launched Idea Pins last year to bridge this gap, Shuffles seems like a more compatible medium that pays homage to Pinterest’s origins while looking forward to the future of creativity — which is sure to bring great success.
At the time of publishing, Shuffles is currently iOS-only and free to download on the App Store.
