No stranger to making political statements, Olivia Rodrigo is continuing to use her platform to speak on the issue of abortion access in the United States.
Performing at iconic British music festival, Glastonbury over the weekend, the 19-year old denounced the recent repeal of Roe v Wade, a decision that allows individual states to ban access to abortion—11 states of which immediately enacted complete bans, with a number more expected to follow suit in the coming days and weeks.
As The Guardian reports, the singer performed alongside British artist Lily Allen, explaining “This is actually my first Glastonbury and I’m sharing this stage with Lily, this is the biggest dream come true ever…But I’m also equally as heartbroken about what happened in America yesterday,” she said. Olivia then dedicated the duo’s performance of Lily Allen’s song ‘Fuck You’ to the Supreme Court justices who voted in favour of banning abortion access in the US.
“I’m devastated and terrified,” the SOUR singer explained. “So many women and so many girls are going to die because of this. I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don’t give a shit about freedom. The song is for the justices: Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh. We hate you! We hate you.”
Fans and public figures alike have praised Olivia for her courage and bluntness in directly calling out members of the Supreme Court. Olivia’s statement echoes that of many others performing at Glastonbury, including Billie Eilish, Halsey and Phoebe Bridgers.
